"Rethink
your idea of mariachi music... Mariachi Cobre may force you to
rethink your idea of mariachi music. Forget the strolling guitar
bands in Mexican restaurants - 'Este Es Mi Mariachi' will introduce
you to one of the most highly developed folk traditions in the
Western Hemisphere. Like the legendary dance bands of Cuba, Mexico's
mariachi tradition has roots in the chamber orchestras of Baroque
Europe, the indigenous music of the Native American, the rhythmic
drive of West African music and the passion of Spanish folk and
flamenco music. On this second release by Mariachi Cobre, the
group is joined by Linda Ronstadt, who celebrates her own Hispanic
heritage in a pair of duets with bandleader, Steve Carillo, and
by producer/arranger Brian Keane, the noted composer and multi-
instrumentalist. Much of the album is devoted to traditional mariachi
music, but both Carillo and Keane contribute several deft and
contemporary arrangements of older songs; and a well-known piece
from the classical guitar tradition, Manuel Ponce's 'Estrellita',
gets a traditional mariachi treatment. Mariachi Cobre has been
a popular group since the late 1960s, entertaining literally millions
of visitors. This ensemble has been the headline performance group
at the Mexican Pavilion at Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center since
it opened in Florida in 1981."
"Mariachi
Cobre has been my favorite group of musicians from the time I
first heard them on a recording. They bring to the listener the
genuine sound of Mariachi. When you listen to them perform you
get this feeling that you are in Mexico. You also know for certain
that they are having a great time as they perform; almost as though
they are trying to make one another have even more fun than the
next musician. I can get out of a slump in the middle of the day
by playing any of their CD's. Sigan adelante muchachos! Keep moving
forward ahead of us guys!"
"Hailing
from Tuscon, AZ Mariachi Cobre are by far the finest Mariachi
ensemble in the United States, and are warmly accepted as one
of the best in Mexico, too. This CD is their finest so far - A
terrific mixture of very traditional 'son'-based Mariachi, romantic
Ranchera ballads, and some outstanding Nortena arrangements. The
Cobres feature not only top-notch players, but all of the principle
singers boast powerful, inspirational voices. This CD will make
you want to party, dance, sing, cry, laugh, and shout a few 'gritos'.
If you only buy one Mariachi CD in your life, make this the one.
Linda Ronstadt contributes her lovely voice to two tracks. If
you like this CD, also be sure to get their prior, eponymously-titled
CD."
