"Long Journey Home" (Soundtrack)
This
Grammy-winning release and soundtrack to the hit Disney/PBS series
"Long Journey Home: The Irish In America" (directed
by Tom Lennon) is a collaborative effort between Chieftains' leader
Paddy Moloney and Brian Keane. The film is six hours long and
spans four episodes. Research for traditional music was provided
by Paddy Moloney and Irish-American musician/historian Mick Moloney.
Brian Keane scored the film, composed the majority of the music,
and provided almost all of the orchestrations. It took four months,
and several trips to Ireland to complete the CD and soundtrack.
The Irish Film Orchestra and several Irish stars were recorded
at Windmill Lane Recording Studios (favorite recording studio
of famous Irish rock band U2, among others). Additional sessions,
involving top Irish-American musicians including Johnny Cunningham,
Seamus Egan, Eileen Ivers, and Joanie Madden took place at Sound
Techniques in Boston MA and at Little Big Feet Studios in Monroe
CT. Editing and orchestral mixing was done at Little Big Feet
Studios. Final mixing for the CD was accomplished by Jeffrey Lesser
at Clinton Recording Studios in New York City. The CD contains
mostly music from the soundtrack, with additional performances
by some of the biggest stars in Irish music, including Van Morrison,
Sinead O'Connor, and Elvis Costello. Although the CD was produced
by Paddy Moloney, cuts 2, 4, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, and part of
cuts 3, 13 and 16 were orchestrated and produced by Brian Keane.
"Long Journey Home" was on the Billboard Top 10 World
charts for 6 months.

Entertainment Weekly: ". . . Van Morrison's soulful 'Shenandoah'
reveals the kinship between American and Irish ballads, while
Sinead O'Connor's 'Skibbereen' has the dark beauty of a Grimm

heartening and heart-rending. . . .'
