"New York"
One
of the most ambitious projects Brian Keane Music has ever taken
on, Ric Burns' epic 12-hour documentary "New York" chronicles
the history of the metropolis from the early days of the Dutch
settlement to modern times. Along the way, Brian Keane was asked
to write music with emotional themes that unified the story and
the city, not only in its disparite intentions and ethnicities,
but over a period of 400 years of history as well. In addition,
Ric Burns had very specific ideas about the score, and insisted
on very simple and heartfelt gestures to compliment a very complex
story. As if this weren't enough, this music also had to coexist
with the work of composers like Bernstein, Gershwin, and Ellington.
The film project was over five years in the making, the score
over six months. The results were a critically acclaimed film
and top-selling soundtrack, with the highest viewer ratings on
PBS since Ric Burns' classic "The Civil War".
