"Summer Solstice"
This
popular CD spawned the "Summer Solstice" series on the Windham
Hill label, and also launched the careers of guitarist Sean Harkness,
who was featured on the title cut, and female New Age group The
Angels Of Venice. The CD is a compilation of Windham Hill's premier
artists, and is highly effective at conveying a richly atmospheric,
distinctly laid-back summer feeling throughout the disc. The compilation,
produced by Brian Keane, in consultation with Windham Hill marketing
director Ron McCarrell, is mostly made up of Brian Keane productions.
Standouts include The Angels Of Venice's remake of Cat Stevens'
classic "Sad Lisa", Michael Hedges' "Dream Beach", Michael Manring
and Paul McCandliss' "In Our Jasmine Days", and Hawaiian slack-key
guitarist Keola Beamer's "Kalena Kai". George Winston appears
on the CD playing solo harmonica on "M.M.'s Dunk". "Summer Solstice"
was a Billboard Top 10 New Age record for four months, and sold
well into the six figures.
