"The Way West" (Soundtrack)

One of the most critically acclaimed and moving projects in our catalog, "The Way West" chronicles the final five decades of the American frontier, from the time of the Gold Rush until after the last gasp of the Indian Wars at Wounded Knee. It was the greatest adventure the nation would ever undergo -- and it would bring to fulfillment both the bright promise and the dark possibilities of the American dream. Between 1845 and 1893 the American west was lost and won. The vast continent Thomas Jefferson was sure would take a thousand years to settle and subdue was wound with ribbons of iron and wire and brought within the dominion of the United States. Along the way, the lives of hundreds of thousands of Native Americans were violently disrupted and all but destroyed.

Brian Keane's epic score to Ric Burns' brilliant six-hour documentary "The Way West" combines sweeping orchestral themes, soaring melodies, and beautiful heart-wrenching adagios with indigenous American music, hauntingly performed by the premiere Native American musicians of our time and renowned traditional country performers. The score possesses a feeling of the big, open spaces of the American west, helped substantially by the masterful engineering of Ron Bach. The score was recorded at Little Big Feet Studios, with additional recordings made on location involving various Native American performers. All these elements work together to powerfully transport the listener to an earlier period of American history, to the great adventure that unfolded along "The Way West".

Guest musicians include Earl Bullhead, Bill Douglas, Spotted Eagle, Dean Evanson, Will Galison, The Greyhorse Singers, Kenny Kosek, Carlos Nakai, Steve Roach, Barry Stramp, Eric Weissberg, Whitefish Bay, and members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra conducted by Brian Keane.
